American territory 2600 miles southwest of Hawaii on Pacific Ocean. Islands of Pacific called Polynesia.

Arches

Contains more than 2000 natural arches. Natural structures are formed out of salt beds formed 300 millions years ago when the inland oceans dried.  The salt beds are buried under the stones. The structures are formed by rising salt.

Red sandstones deposited about 150 million years ago. Groundwater dissolves salt and causes it to rise up.


Big Bend

The rocks are formed from the seas that flowed through this regions 100s of million years ago. Formed from deposits of limestone and shale.

Saguaro

Big trees and big canyons.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon

Known for Giant forests, 240 caves. These are two contiguous parks managed together. Mt. Whitney is in this park.

Shenandoah

Blue Ridge Mountains – What is the mountain range this is part of? Appalachian. Which states does Appalachian range cover – Georgia in the south to PA in the north.

Yosemite

Granite rocks formed about 10 million years ago. Deep, narrow canyons.

Biscayne

Protects offshore barrier reef, northern Florida reef. Protects mangrove swamps, coral limestone keys

Everglades

3rd largest national park in the 48 states. It has numerous flora and fauna. Florida panthers, alligators

Dry Tortugas


Ft. Jefferson, largest masonry structure in western hemisphere. This park is known for coral reefs, ship wrecks
